    Description

      The new lookup_options introduced by PUP-5395 introduces a new level of complexity when looking up and merging values. It's now desirable to not just explain how data is found and merged but also the origin of the merge instruction/configuration.

      It must be possible to see if the merge was passed in as an argument or if it was found in a lookup_options hash. In case of the latter, it must also be possible to see how that hash was assembled.
